The spelling pattern is: grapheme 'tch' is used after a short vowel sound.

So why aren't they spelled mutch, sutch, whitch and ritch?

  • much, such and which are function words. They are either determiners or pronouns. Function words use the shortest possible spelling option, which is why these words end in 'ch' rather than 'tch'.
  • rich was influenced by the French word 'riche', meaning 'rich, wealthy, magnificent'.

A fun way to help kids remember these four exceptions is WoRMS = which, rich, much & such.
