This FreeBee is inside The Hive, along with thousands more, plus powerful digital tools and time-saving systems.

Use these free printable Word of the Day templates in three differentiated levels, so every student can work on the same focus word at the level that suits them. Students start by breaking the word into letters, sounds and syllables, then move into morphology, parts of speech and meaning as they progress through the levels.

What's included:

Level 1

  • count the letters

  • break the word into phonemes using 4, 5 or 6 sound boxes

  • count the syllables

  • record words that rhyme

  • use the word in a sentence

  • draw the word or sentence

Picture icons are included as an extra scaffold for students.

Level 2:

  • map the word into phonemes

  • break it into syllables and record the total count

  • build the word from prefix, base word and suffix

  • find words within the word

  • identify the part of speech

  • record synonyms

  • use the word in a sentence

Level 3:

  • split the word into phonemes and syllables

  • build the word from prefix, base word and suffix

  • record other words that use the same prefix, base word or suffix

  • record synonyms and antonyms

  • identify the part of speech

  • write a definition

  • use the word in a sentence

The same focus word can run across all three levels at once, which makes this straightforward to use as a daily warm-up, a morning routine task, a spelling rotation, or a station activity.

Hive members can pair this with the digital Word of the Day to map the same focus word digitally, with full control over which particular focuses you’d like to use with your class.
