This set of fluency texts supports Year 5 and 6 reading fluency practice within the Year 5 & 6 Geography curriculum (ACARA).

Ten sets of comprehension texts written to match the Year 5/6 Geography curriculum, so your reading block builds content knowledge at the same time as comprehension skills. Each text comes with six questions and a full set of explicit teaching slides, plus everything you need to run a weekly fluency routine and Expert Groups.

The questions are written to push students past surface retrieval, asking them to justify opinions, use evidence from the text and think about the author's purpose.

What's included:

  • 10 comprehension texts: Caring for Country, How Our Local Environment Has Changed, People Can Change Places, Population and Life Expectancy Across Asia, Daily Life Around the World, Living With The Land, Interconnections, Environmental Diversity, Australia's Natural Hazards, Powerful Forces of Nature

  • Six questions per text in two formats: questions in order for students working independently, and randomised questions so each Expert Group isn't always answering the same type of question

  • Explicit teaching slides for every text, covering whole class prediction, monitoring for meaning, questioning, making connections, summarising and Expert Group responses

  • Weekly fluency routine slides and teaching notes, broken down session by session across four sessions

  • Paired fluency routine slides showing how partners read, give feedback and swap roles

  • Elements of feedback slides covering pace, grammar, volume, prosody and intonation

  • Extended response format slides for RACE: restate the question, answer the question, cite text evidence, explain and elaborate

  • How Expert Groups work: slides explaining home groups, numbered roles and how students move to their expert group and back again
