The Hive

This resource is inside The Hive, along with thousands more, plus powerful digital tools and time-saving systems.

Support students in developing a strong understanding of mass by comparing, categorising and justifying their thinking with these hands-on sorting mats. This activity helps build key concepts around weight by encouraging students to use familiar benchmarks and real-world reasoning.

Sort each object into the correct category by deciding if it is light or heavy, or whether it is less than, about, or more than 1 kilogram. Discuss choices and explain reasoning as you sort.

What’s included:

  • Version 1: 6 coloured mats (Light / Heavy)

  • Version 2: 6 coloured mats (Less than 1 kg / About 1 kg / More than 1 kg)

  • 20 picture cards for sorting

  • Black and white versions included for easy printing

  • Recording sheets in two formats (Light/Heavy and <, ≈, > 1 kg)

  • Recording sheets with 6 or 12 table options for differentiation
