Are you looking for low-prep decodable word activities for your Kindergarten and Grade 1 phonics lessons? These r-controlled vowel word hexagons are a fun and engaging way to develop phonics knowledge of the following r-controlled vowels:
words with air / are
words with ar / a
words with eer / ear
words with er / ur / ir
words with or / ore / aw / au
Students are given the grapheme in the middle of the hexagon, and must write all the matching words on their whiteboards. As an extension, see if they can think of additional words which use that spelling pattern. Hexagons are included for 3-sound words (e.g. fern, horn) and 4 and 5 sound words (e.g. acorn, curtain).
