This phonics card game can be used as a play-based learning phonics center for Grade 2 and 3 students. It will help them to consolidate their knowledge of R-Controlled Vowel OR sound with a fun and engaging UNO-style game.
Decodable word cards are included with over 80 words using the common spellings for R-Controlled Vowel OR sounds.
HOW TO PLAY
Deal out 7 cards per kid and place one card face up in the middle of the circle. Going around the circle, students have to put down a word that uses the same grapheme as the card in the middle e.g. if the word ‘fork' is in the middle, they would need to put down a word that also uses the ‘or' spelling. If students can put a word card down, they have to say the word as they put it down.
If students don't have a word card to put down, they can either use a:
•Flip Card- change to a different grapheme (e.g. or, aw, ore)
•Pick Up Card- next person has to pick up a card
•Wild Card- free turn
If there is no card that they can play, pick up a card. Winner is the first person to get rid of all their cards.
Extension alternatives as students put down their card:
- Put the word into a sentence- can include sentence focuses of descriptive language or compound sentences etc
- Think of another word which uses that grapheme
