This resource is inside The Hive, along with thousands more, plus powerful digital tools and time-saving systems.

This teaching slides resource introduces quoted and reported speech and explores how each form shows what someone said, including the punctuation rules for writing quoted text. The slides cover what speech is, then work through each type - quoted text (exact words, quotation marks, comma placement before and after the dialogue tag) and reported text (own words, no quotation marks) - with a definition and examples for each.

Practice slides give students the chance to apply their understanding through a range of task types.

What's included:

  • Introductory slides on speech covering quoted text, reported text, and the punctuation rules for writing dialogue

  • Example slides covering quoted and reported speech - each with a definition, key rules, and examples

  • 15 practice slides including writing quoted and reported sentences for a given topic (I Do/We Do/You Do format), spotting the difference between quoted and reported speech and changing sentences from one form into the other
