Are you looking for an open-ended ordering activity to challenge students to think flexibly about decimal values?

Students cut out decimal cards and place them into a grid so that every row and column reads from smallest to largest. Because many correct arrangements are possible, the puzzle encourages reasoning and discussion rather than a single right answer. Three puzzles are included across 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5 grids, allowing you to match the challenge to your students.

What's included:

  • Puzzle 1 — 3x3 grid with 9 decimal cards (decimals to 2 places, e.g. 0.32, 0.50, 0.72, 0.95)

  • Puzzle 2 — 4x4 grid with 16 decimal cards (mix of 1 and 2 decimal place values, e.g. 0.7, 1.32, 1.54, 1.86)

  • Puzzle 3 — 5x5 grid with 25 decimal cards (wider range including values from 0 to 2.0)
