This resource is packed with craft, literacy and maths activities inspired by Nonno's garden, his stories and the special bond he shares with his granddaughter. Perfect for planning a whole-day Symphony of Stories experience or weaving into your Book Week celebrations!

What's included:

Book Craft

  • Watering can craft - assemble a 3D watering can filled with flowers, in colour or black and white

Differentiated Literacy Activities

  • Open-ended writing prompts - 10 prompts inspired by family, tradition and treasured memories, with three differentiated templates

  • Descriptive similes - illustrate similes from the story, then create original similes, across differentiated levels

  • Show, don't tell - find and match examples of how Nonno shows love through his actions, then apply this to writing about your own family, across differentiated levels

  • Persuasive writing: rubbish or treasure? - argue why a treasured item is treasure, not rubbish, using the OREO structure

  • Letter writing - write a letter to a grandparent or special someone explaining why you love them

  • My ... loves - draw and write about the things a grandparent or special someone loves, and what you love doing with them, across differentiated levels

Differentiated Mathematics Activities

  • Multiplication - solve word problems and draw matching arrays using Nonno's tomato and plum trees, across differentiated levels

  • Nonno's day: time - draw or write the time to match each part of Nonno's day, covering o'clock, half hour and quarter hour, across differentiated levels

  • Measuring tomato vines - use tomatoes as an informal measuring tool to measure vine lengths, with an alternative ribbon measuring task

  • Data: favourite vegetables - survey classmates on their favourite vegetable, then tally and graph the results

  • Area of Nonno's vegetable garden - draw garden beds to match given areas, or calculate the area of drawn garden beds, across differentiated levels

Design Activities

  • Design a wind chime - design a wind chime, choosing materials and how the pieces will hang

  • Design a garden pot - design a decorated pot for a favourite plant, herb or vegetable

  • Family heirloom box - design a special box to hold something precious, with fold-out templates

  • Welcome doorway - design a doorway that welcomes visitors, including decorations and a welcome sign

  • Design a seed packet - design a seed packet for a plant, including a picture, name and growing instructions
