What are embedded mnemonics?

Embedded picture mnemonics are a proven, research-based method for teaching children letters and the sounds they represent. These are where a keyword is cleverly embedded into the shape of the letter itself.

By using these “embedded mnemonics”—pictures that help children recall letter sounds—learning becomes more effective. Research studies (Ehri, 2014; Ehri, Deffner, & Wilce, 1984; McNamara, 2012; Schmidman & Ehri, 2010) have shown that these mnemonic visuals significantly reduce the amount of repetition required for children to master letters and sounds. They also lead to less confusion, better long-term retention, and improved ability to apply this knowledge in reading and spelling.
