Internal Volume: Measuring by Packing

The Hive

This resource is inside The Hive, along with thousands more, plus powerful digital tools and time-saving systems.

This activity supports students to estimate and measure internal volume by physically packing containers with informal units.

Students first predict how many measuring tools (such as blocks or cups) will fit inside a given container, then test their estimates and record their results.

It includes a version with three suggested containers as well as an open-ended version so students can choose their own.

A great task for linking measurement to the real world and encouraging mathematical reflection.
