This pack of high-frequency word printables can be used as worksheets for phonics review activities, or placed in write and wipe mats to become literacy centers. These print and go worksheets have been updated to align with evidence-based practices by focusing on the SOUNDS not individual LETTERS. If teaching heart words, encourage students to identify the tricky part of the word and draw a heart over the top.
The following activity ideas are designed to be used only after students have already been explicitly taught the word and the ‘heart’ or tricky part of the word. These activities and games will then provide students with repeated exposure to the word, so that they can commit those words to memory.
This pack includes over 100 pages with:
- Colour, trace, write, glue, and circle the word
- Colour, find, trace, write and circle the word in decodable sentences
- Trace, write, unjumble the sounds, write the missing sounds, put in a sentence.
- Fish for the word
Individual worksheets x 4 included for the following words: was, the, is, as, has, his, to, are, you, of, see, for, look, good, he, she, they, this, me, we, be, have, want, what, give
Some things to keep in mind during high-frequency word games or activities:
- Ensure students are building letter-sound associations
- Build in phonemic awareness skills (segmenting the word, mapping the word)
- Use self-checking or peer-checking so that students will receive immediate feedback, and are practising the correct spelling.
