Are you looking for phonics centers to consolidate high frequency words with tricky spellings? These synthetic phonics activity mats will help your students to use orthographic mapping to unpack heart words - these are words with tricky or irregular spellings.

Two designs are included, allowing you to differentiate your instruction:

 MAT DESIGN 1 (Portrait)

1. Say the word

2. Read in the context of a decodable sentence

3. Map the word

4. Spell the word (or build the word)

5. Identify the tricky part

MAT DESIGN 2 (Landscape)

1. Read in the context of a decodable sentence

2. Map the word

3. Spell or build the word and identify the tricky part

Simply place in write and wipe mats to use over and over again to consolidate high-frequency word knowledge.

20 high-frequency words with tricky spellings (heart words) are included:

  • like

  • me

  • be

  • we

  • want

  • what

  • where

  • there

  • do

  • who

  • her

  • were

  • should

  • would

  • could

  • have

  • give

  • live

  • your

  • four

 Heart Words are words with a tricky part which we have to learn by heart. These ‘tricky parts’ are either irregular/rare spellings, OR spelling patterns that have not yet been taught.

 5 high-frequency decodable flash words are also included:

  • very

  • which

  • so

  • go

  • no

Flash words are high-frequency words with regular spellings. These words can be easily sounded out (decoded) but we want students to know these words ‘in a flash’.

By using the alphabetic code to identify the different graphemes, students will be able to understand how to spell all words on the high-frequency words list of any phonics or spelling program
