Do you struggle to teach high-frequency words with tricky spellings to your students? These synthetic phonics PowerPoint lesson slides will help your students to use orthographic mapping to unpack words with difficult spellings in English.

Each word has six different slides:

  1. Read the word with animated sound buttons - each phoneme/sound is underneath

  2. Segment the word with sound boxes

  3. Identify the tricky spelling or tricky spellings in the word

  4. Unpack the word- show students other examples of where this spelling is used in other words

  5. A "did you know" slide with facts about the word to help the students understand the word origin and/or spelling patterns in the word.

  6. Review the word one more time with animated sound buttons

20 high-frequency words with tricky spellings (heart words) are included:

  • all

  • small

  • now

  • how

  • down

  • our

  • out

  • round

  • about

  • around

  • again

  • away

  • today

  • says

  • going

  • come

  • some

  • other

  • too

  • here

Heart Words are words with a tricky part which we have to learn by heart. These ‘tricky parts’ are either irregular/rare spellings, OR spelling patterns that have not yet been taught.

5 high-frequency decodable flash words are also included:

  • day

  • way

  • my

  • by

  • why

Flash words are high-frequency words with regular spellings. These words can be easily sounded out (decoded) but we want students to know these words ‘in a flash’.

By using the alphabetic code to identify the different graphemes, students will be able to understand how to spell all words on the high-frequency words list of any phonics or spelling program.
