Created for Book Week 2026

Celebrate Dear Broccoli by Jo Dabrowski and Cate James with this cross-curricular activity pack, designed to inspire humour, persuasive writing and healthy food choices in primary classrooms.

This resource is packed with craft, literacy and maths activities inspired by Frank's letter-writing feud with his least favourite vegetable. Perfect for planning a whole-day Symphony of Stories experience or weaving into your Book Week celebrations!

What's included:

Book Craft

  • 3D Broccoli Letter Craft - students colour, cut and fold a 3D triangular prism letter, complete with a Broccoli character holding a pencil, and can write their own short note from Broccoli (colour and black & white versions included)

Differentiated Literacy Activities

  • Open-ended writing prompts - respond to prompts inspired by the story's letters, persuasion and changing friendships, with matching lined writing templates

  • Broccoli's fancy words - find Broccoli's fancy words in the story, then write definitions, synonyms and original sentences

  • Hyperbole - match examples of hyperbole to the correct picture, then draw or write original examples

  • Letter writing - continue the story by writing a letter to Carrot or another vegetable

  • Persuasive writing: you need to try... - use persuasive skills (and optionally the OREO structure) to convince a reluctant eater to try a disliked food

Differentiated Mathematics Activities

  • Sprinkle combinations - work out combinations of 2, combinations of 3, and mixed combination questions using ice-cream sprinkles

  • Data: unpopular vegetables - survey classmates on the most unpopular vegetable and graph the results

  • Exploring 1 kilogram - explore the mass of items lighter than, about, or heavier than 1kg, with an extension reading kitchen scales

Design Activities

  • Design a poster - advertise the benefits of broccoli (or another misunderstood vegetable) for a fruit shop display

  • Stationery designs - design the perfect stationery for Frank and/or Broccoli to write their letters on

  • Perfect dinner plate - draw and explain your own perfect dinner
