Are you looking for a low-prep phonics activity for your Kindergarten and Grade 1 classroom? Students will love playing this phonics game, and it will help to develop their decoding skills and spelling skills for words with the following consonant digraphs:
- words with th
- words with ch
- words with sh
- words with wh
- words with ck
- words with ll
- words with zz
- words with ff
- words with ss
- words with qu
- words with ng
- words with x (not technically a digraph, but included here due to its complexity compared to the other single sounds)
Two versions of this game are included. Use at different stages of the year OR to differentiate this game for different levels of students.
ROLL IT READ IT KEEP IT:
This activity can be applied to any set of decodable words. Simply place a set of words face-down on the gameboard. Students take it in turns to roll the dice and pick up a word from the corresponding pile. They need to read the word in order to be able to keep it.
ROLL IT SPELL IT KEEP IT:
This alternative is the same, except students need to spell the word. A partner or group member picks up the word, and asks the player to spell the word.
If they get it correct, they can keep the card.
Over 180 word cards are included– I suggest printing on coloured paper or cardboard
