Get students up and moving as they measure caterpillars placed around the room and order them from shortest to longest in this informal units activity.
Place the caterpillar templates around the room, demonstrate measuring the first one together using an agreed unit, then send students off to measure the rest independently. Students record each measurement and order the caterpillars from shortest to longest. Two versions of the templates are included — one with measurement lines along the caterpillar to help students line up their units, and one without for students ready to measure without that support.
