'A Bag and a Bird' Activity Pack

'A Bag and a Bird' is an entertaining story that features familiar places to children who live in Australia or have visited Sydney. The story explores the concept of taking care of our environment and the effect it can have on animals if we don't.

This activity pack includes activities to support this text, which allow students to discuss, comprehend, make connections and understand the importance of caring for the environment. There are various activities that can be adapted and cater for Pre- Year 6. 

Included in this pack:

*Narrative Mountain- students or teachers can plot the story on this scaffold to show the events in the story, the peak complication and the resolution. 

* Setting Scaffold- students can identify various places in the story and write or draw what different characters did in that setting. 

* Story Map- this allows students to follow the journey taken in the story and what happened in each place in the story.

* Sentence strips- students identify the subject, verb, preposition and object in each sentence. 

* Suffix Writing activity- students add 'ed and 'ing' to the base words from the story. 

* Sequence of Events- students can write or draw main events from the story in the sequence they occured.

* Write a Sentence- students use 'place' picture cards to build their sentence around. This will become the prepositional phrase.

* Text to Self Connection- students can think of things or places they can relate to from the story and make real world connections. 

* Make a Poster- students can create a persuasive poster to explain why it is important to put rubbish in the bin and care for the environment and wildlife. 

* Colouring In sheet- students can complete this mindful colouring with images that relate to the story.

Discuss how authors create characters using language and images (ACELT1581)

Discuss characters and events in a range of literary texts and share personal responses to these texts, making connections with students' own experiences (ACELT1582)

Discuss features of plot, character and setting in different types of literature and explore some features of characters in different texts (ACELT1584)

Discuss texts in which characters, events and settings are portrayed in different ways, and speculate on the authors’ reasons (ACELT1594)

Draw connections between personal experiences and the worlds of texts, and share responses with others (ACELT1596)
