WORD LADDER TEMPLATES

These word ladder templates are an open-ended phonics tool which can be used to help students develop their phonics knowledge and advanced phonemic awareness skills.

Students can add, delete and substitute different phonemes to create new words.

These templates can be used all year round - as students learn more phonemes/spelling alternatives, they can incorporate this knowledge into their word ladders. 

Some possible differentiation ideas:

• Ask students to only swap certain sounds e.g. just beginning sounds, just ending sounds, a mix of beginning/ending sounds etc
• Scaffold students by providing them with a list of taught sounds
  
• Include nonsense words e.g. mat - mag - map - mip - tip etc
  
• Provide students with word/picture cards to start their ladders
