Decodable Word Lists - Schwa Sound Words

These schwa sound word lists are the perfect companion for your phonics lessons! Teach students to identify the schwa sound in the beginning, middle and end of words.

The schwa sound word lists are sorted in two different ways:

1. Sorted by vowel sound

• Schwa words with a
• Schwa words with e
• Schwa words with i
• Schwa words with o
• Schwa words with u

2. Sorted by position in the word

• Schwa at the beginning of words
• Schwa in the middle of words
• Schwa at the end of words

Black and white versions are also included.

* Please note that some words may be accent dependant. This list has been compiled from an Australian perspective.

Not included in these lists: words ending in ‘er’, but in many dialects, these words also make the schwa sound e.g. brother, sister, mother.
